Govt’s 3% wage offer 'an insult', says public servant at Durban march

Hundreds of people from union Hospersa and the Public Servants Association have descended on King Dinizulu Park in Durban in preparation for their protest march over pay.

They're upset about the 3% wage increase imposed by the government, which says the adjustments backdated to April, will be paid out next week. 


But unions are demanding a 6.5% increase.

The workers, who belong to the Public Servants Association and health union  are in high spirits as they prepare for their march to Durban's City Hall.


Music can be heard blaring from King Dinizulu Park, where they are gathering. 


Some are chanting on the street. 


A woman who works for a government hospital explained why she's not happy with the 3% salary increase.


"We want better pay. What can we do with 3%? it is a big insult. We deserve a 10% increase. Everything is high; transport, food, cars, houses. We have been working under difficult times for Covid."

A sea of protesters dressed in green and red t-shirts has flooded the park, with local authorities standing by to monitor the procession while more workers are being bussed in. 


There they are expected to hand over a memorandum to KZN Premier Nomusa Ncube Dube at City Hall.
