Govt working to acquire more housing for flood victims: Dube-Ncube
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Local government is trying to acquire more land and vacant buildings for those left destitute by the April floods to ease overcrowding at shelters.

"This is going to be one of our solutions. There are properties in Durban in the city centre where we are now identifying those buildings to say let's try and help people out so that at least families are able to unit and are able to live as families," says KwaZulu-Natal premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube.
More than 6 000 people were left homeless when torrential rains, floods and landslides washed away properties.

So far, local government's taken over a Transnet-owned building in Montclair to house flood victims.
Dube-Ncube says they have built 1 900 temporary housing units for people still staying in community halls and shelters.
"This is in addition to what we have been doing so far. It helps us to get more people in rather than individual houses, because we have been having a problem in acquiring land, particularly in Durban as you would know that there are places that are water-locked, there are places that are steep hilled and we cannot build people those houses again."
