Govt vows to conclude Marikana settlements by end of August
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
It's nearly a decade since the Marikana massacre and the Department of Justice says it remains committed to concluding all matters arising from the deadly wage strike.
On 9th August 2012, about three thousand miners at Lonmin mine near Rustenburg walked out demanding a living wage of R12 500.
After a week of violence that saw several lives lost, police opened fire on the striking mineworkers on the 16th of August, killing 34 and wounding scores more.
Speaking in Pretoria on Wednesday, solicitor general Fhedzisani Pandelani said they were finalising settlements for at least 48 claimants.

He says a court has instructed that all outstanding matters be concluded by the end of this month.
"The 48 matters that I am referring to now would relate in the main to matters where there were personal injuries, where people had to be sent for medical examination, actuarial calculations.
"So as we speak our other colleagues are in court and as part of the report, even without individualising the matters half of those 48 matters have already been settled. The other matters are actually still undergoing discussions between the parties."
