Govt sets ball in motion for more electricity generation

The Department of
Mineral Resources and Energy has gazetted new regulations to procure close
12 000 megawatts of power from independent power producers.
This comes amid Eskom’s growing electricity woes.
The department says that new generating capacity is needed in the country to meet power demands.

The gazette marks the start of a bidding process to provide the new electricity, relying a great deal on solar and wind power.
Electricity produced from the new generation capacity shall be procured through one or more tendering procedures which are fair, equitable, transparent, competitive and cost -effective."
"It shall constitute IPP procurement programmes as contemplated in the regulations,” the department said in the gazetted notice.
