Govt battling to get older men jabbed
Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
Older men are being encouraged to vaccinate against Covid-19.
The Health Department’s deputy director-general Dr Nicholas Crisp says the number of older men getting the jab isn’t what they’d like it to be.
He made the remarks during a media briefing on Friday morning.
Crisp says they’ve also been battling to get those without medical aid to come forward.
“We have also noticed that the uninsured population are dragging behind, notwithstanding the total increase in the vaccinations that have been possible.
“This population, particularly in urban areas, are not coming forward and not being vaccinated as readily as we would have liked.”
South Africa has so far administered over 7 million Covid-19 vaccine shots since rolling out its programme in February.
This week, government announced that those aged between 18 and 34 would be next in line to get their jabs from September.
“This is specifically a message to the men out there, we are not managing to reach that many men,” said Crisp.
“Specifically in the older age groups above 50 the men are not turning out in their numbers for their vaccination.”
