Bomikazi Molapo with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries says this regulation is due to efforts to manage the outbreak.

"If people were to go against what we're saying - we will have a situation where we have the influenza in the entire country and we don't want that," she said.

It's been confirmed there's been a second case of avian or bird flu on a South African farm.

The department says the Standerton farm has been placed under quarantine and a massive cull of more than 25 000 infected birds has been planned.

This is the second farm affected in Mpumulanga.

"We confirmed a case of outbreak in a farm in Mpumalanga last week so we've placed this ban to try and manage the spread of the disease," she said.

Molapo says the situation will be assessed countrywide after the 14-day ban on the sale of live hens.

Earlier this month, South Africa suspended all trade in bird and chicken products from Zimbabwe after an outbreak of avain flu there.
