The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Elections led by Minister for Cooperative Governance Des Van Rooyen has briefed media on the state of readiness for the 2016 Local Government Elections.
Van Rooyen says they are happy with the turnout over the two voter registration weekends.
He says they are particularly satisfied with the number of young South Africans who came out to add their names to the voters' roll.
According to the IEC, about 1.3 million new voters were added to the voters' roll.

Van Rooyen says more than 6.6 million people visited the various voting stations across the country during the March and April registration weekends.
He says there is no plan to have another registration weekend.
"We urge all citizens who have not registered to utilise the intervening period until the election date is proclaimed.
"They must visit offices of the IEC in their local municipalities to update their details on the voters' roll. And of course provide addresses where addresses [are missing]," he said.
The municipal elections will take place on August 3
