Godongwana’s mini-budget not pro-poor, says DA

The DA says the Finance Minister has failed to cater for South African households who are unable to put enough food on their table.

The party's Shadow Minister of Finance Dion George has been reacting to the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement which Enoch Godongwana tabled in Parliament on Wednesday.

"The minister did say that they were going to extend the social relief of distress grant, which we do support. (But) there is no finance for it and there is no plan and that's already for one year."

 

"What the minister could have done also is he could have cut back on levies on fuel, which would have made petrol prices less expensive and also brought down the cost of food because it also brings down the cost of transportation, he did not do that."

 

"And also what he could have done is extend at the zero-rated food basket, he didn't do that either."
