DA presents alternative mini-budget to grow economy, create jobs
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The Democratic Alliance has called on Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana to focus his attention on how to cushion South Africans from the rising cost of living.
The opposition party on Monday presented its alternative Medium-Term Budget Policy.
It said Godongwana should consider policy changes that will not only grow the economy but generate jobs.
Shadow Minister of Finance Dion George said the energy sector needs a boost to combat the levels of load shedding crippling businesses.
He also said the government needs to find a lasting solution to manage its gross national debt and government expenditure and offer tax relief to support vulnerable communities, among other things.
“We need to look at how our economy is growing to grow to create sustainable jobs. We need to look at how the never-ending rolling blackouts are going to be resolved because that is getting in the way of our economic growth.
“Very importantly, also government needs to cut back on its expenditure and manage upward spiraling government debt that is putting pressure on basic service delivery. Also, very crucially, we need to look at how the poor in South Africa is going to be protected from the never-ending rising cost of living."
Minister Godongwana will table the mini-budget in Parliament on Wednesday.
