Godongwana’s budget leaves unions unimpressed

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) has criticised Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana's annual budget speech, saying it wasn't a win for employment.

The minister tabled his 2024 budget in Parliament on Wednesday.

The federation's Zwelinzima Vavi says the speech failed to highlight anything concrete.

"The minister only speaks about unemployment insofar as he refers to these presidential projects. The presidential projects are not a real solution to unemployment. It’s more like to say three months, six months, nine months you will be in some employment opportunity and there after you go back to join the now nearly 12 million people who are unemployed in the country. So, we are very disappointed."

Cosatu's Matthew Parks says there should have been what he calls aggressive proposals to tackle unemployment, load shedding and cable theft.

"This is a business-as-usual budget. It's focusing on reducing the debt but not enough on growing the economy. We do welcome the increase in police headcount, but we had hoped to see increases in the National Prosecuting Authority as well as the courts, because we need to get a grip on crime and corruption."
