Go! Durban project temporarily halted
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The eThekwini Municipality says it's taken a decision to temporarily suspend the construction of the Go Durban! Project.
This follows weeks of consistent disruptions to the major construction project.
The municipality says still at issue is taxi operators who say they're being sidelined and want to be included in the planned Integrated Rapid Transport Network.
Construction workers have also downed tools over pay.
The municipality's Thulani Mbatha says while their hands are tied on the payment issues, as it's the duty of the sub-contracted companies to pay workers, they are working on resolving issues of the taxi industry.
"There had to be a process of negotiations so that reach the agreement with the bus and taxi industry. At the moment, there is a draft document that will have to be agreed upon with stakeholders. We obviously have to go through the process. That process is due to start anytime soon," he said.
Mbatha says they're also investigating whether the recent disruptions on the major interchange on the N2 off-ramp just before the Gateway Shopping Centre could be linked to those on the Go Durban Project.
