GNU: Open invitation for parties to join, says ANC

The government of national unity is still open to any party that wants to join.

That's according to ANC MP Mzwandile Masina, who used to be Ekurhuleni's mayor.

“The ANC has emphasised that the journey is not closed while inviting all parties that are represented in parliament to come and negotiate so we can finally sign a final agreement with all parties."

There's been a public disagreement following news of the Patriotic Alliance's entrance to the GNU.

The DA's Helen Zille's said that, as part of the signed statement of intent, the ANC must consult with existing members before inviting new parties on board.

Speaking after the presidential inauguration in Tshwane, Masina said all parties should be free to make up their own minds.

“We should not be spokespersons for other parties, rather spend time trying to make sure that we refine the work because this is about the interest of the company.

“So, we are looking forward to working with other political parties because that's what the country has given us in terms of the electoral outcomes and it's not for us to say who we work with or not."

Meanwhile, DA spokesperson Solly Malatsi said President Cyril Ramaphosa's inaugural speech spoke to the mood of the country.

“It's very encouraging signs for the next phase of discussions for the GNU. Which will most likely be centrered around the composition of the cabinet and the formulation of the joint policy priorities for the administration going forward."

Ramaphosa's assured the country that the Government of National Unity will prioritise the needs of the people.

He delivered a public address at the Union Buildings on Wednesday, shortly after taking his oath of office.

“It is a moment where must choose to either move forward together or risk losing all we have built, In this moment we must choose to move forward."
