The Ferguson Road Neighbourhood Watch is urging communities to meet their neighbours and take charge of their street in an effort to reduce crime.

"Know who's living next door to you, know who's living across the road from you instead of hiding away in your house pretending it's like a prison. Get out on your road, go and have a chat, when you're picking up your post from the postbox. Just say hello, see what's happening in your road, that's how you can start," said Helen Thompson of neighbourhood watch.

Thompson says their area has crime just like any other suburb in the country.

"We've got more or less the same problems as everybody else. It's the car-jackings, remote jamming. People jumping over fences stealing washing, stealing bicycles," she said.

In an effort to help the community know their neighbours, the neighbourhood watch has hosted a Ferguson Road Halloween party for the past 4 years. Thompson says the party is meant to get people outside and interacting with fellow residents.

She says other communities looking to begin their own neighbourhood watches should start off with simple things like finding residents willing to be part of it.

The neighbourhood watch meets with local police regularly, where Thompson says they get safety tips to pass on to their members and community.

Some tips include always ensure your vehicle is locked when leaving it and making sure your cellphone is not visible when walking.
