Glenhills residents demand action over illegal dumping

Residents of Glenhills in Durban North are kicking up a stink over illegal dumping which they say is getting worse by the day.

Illegal dumping always occurs in some Kwa-Zulu Natal areas

They say some people have been leaving their rubbish near the Malacca Road municipal dumpsite.

Arianne Hayes-Hill who runs a local NPO in the area says it poses a danger to children from a nearby informal settlement who often play around the site.

She says, "Look, it's an ongoing problem with the illegal dumping but this particular problem where there's been dumping on the side of the road and up at the top section, has probably been over the last couple of months when the dump closed early due to Covid-19."

Hayes-Hill explains, "So the dump was opened and closed at 2pm. There were people that were coming after 2pm and finding the dump closed and then were just dumping wherever."

Ward Councillor candidate for Ward 110, Aamir Abdul says they need to take action to ensure a cleaner environment.

He says, "I believe that the first and foremost thing that we need to do, is that we need to formalise this dumpsite. We need to upgrade it so that it can cater for the needs of the community effectively. Formal recycling centres also need to be set up in the ward and the surrounding areas.

Abdul adds, "I think if we do that we'll be able to get this problem a little bit more under control because right now it's just getting out of hand. It's a lot worse than what it was actually a few years ago."
