Gigaba: Corruption robbing South Africans of services
Minister of Finance Malusi Gigaba had told delegates at the World Economic Forum Africa that corruption is robbing South Africans of much-needed services.
"We need responsive leadership because it is mainly our people who have not benefitted from the decades-long trade expansion," he said in Durban.
Gigaba said this has led to sectors of society becoming increasingly agitated.
"Narrow and special interests have prevailed over national interest. Society has become increasingly fragmented and frustrated."
Gigaba also touched on illicit financial flows, which he said is taking resources away from the African continent.
"Government should provide an enabling environment for society, labour and business to operate and increase economic participation," he said.
He again spoke about the development of the township economy, saying is at the heart of inclusive growth.
"Our economy needs structural reforms and inclusive growth. It's not only about creating jobs for the black majority but it is about changing the mainstream economy."
