Gauteng accounts for over 3 000 new Covid-19 cases

South Africa continues to record a sharp increase in the number of new Covid-19 cases – since the first patients tested positive with the new Omicron variant.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported another sharp rise in the last 24 hours up to Tuesday evening, with 4 373 new cases confirmed.
Gauteng recorded 3 143 of these new infections – accounting for 72% of new infections nationwide.
Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, each account for 6% of the new cases, while Limpopo and North West accounted for 5% respectively.
A total of 42 664 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours.
The institute says the latest increase represents a 10.2% positivity rate.
An additional 21 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 89 843.
There has been an increase of 119 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, with 2 414 people currently admitted in both public and private health facilities.
On the vaccine front, 175 395 jabs were administered in the last 24 hours.
