Gangsterism linked to fatal school stabbing incident: KZN Education
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
KwaZulu-Natal Education says it needs a strategy to deal with gangsterism at schools.
This after two pupils were killed at a high school, south of Durban recently.
20-year-old Sihle Mngadi and 18-year-old Mangaliso Mbatha were killed at Masakhaneni High in KwaMakhutha last week. It is believed they had tried to stop a group of boys from fighting.
Police say a fight over a cellphone by a group of boys was started outside and then later made its way onto school grounds.
Mngadi and Mbatha were attacked when they tried to intervene.
Education's Muzi Mahlambi says parents have linked the violence to gangsterism.
He says Education and Community Safety officials will meet with parents, staff and pupils at Masakhaneni this morning.
"We are gathering information and its a gangsterism kind of situation that emanates from outside. So the learners were not coming to school. Two MECs will address the learners' parents, the educators and other stakeholders with the view of finding a permanent solution," Mahlambi said.
Counselling has since been offered to learners and teachers at the school.
