Gandhi's great-granddaughter in court for alleged fraud
The Hawks say one of the great-granddaughters of late global human rights activist Mahatma Gandhi is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court today on fraud charges.
Spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi says the 45-year-old, who may not be named until she has appeared in court, allegedly stole over R11-million from two businessmen.
The Hawks arrested her in her Durban home on Thursday evening.
She allegedly approached two businessmen and asked them to invest in her business venture. She claimed she had won a R20m tender to provide bedding to the Netcare hospital group.
She asked them to fund her, allegedly providing forged invoices and documents, claiming that three containers of linen were being shipped in from India. One of the men invested R5.2m, the other R6.2m.
An investigation uncovered that no such tender was ever advertised nor awarded.
She faces charges of theft, fraud, and forgery.
