GALLERY: Fishermen celebrate return of sardines in Durban North
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Sardines are the catch of the day in Durban today. Fishermen at Durban's North Beach were in for a surprise as the silvery fish made an appearance earlier today.
Fishermen netted about 50 crates at Durban's North Beach.
The KZN Sharks Board's Greg Thompson says it's not uncommon for this to happen so late in the year.
"This is something that has happened before, it is called return sardines, and often the return sardine which is going back south ends up in the Durban Basin. The sardine season has been over for quite some time. A lot of the migration is going north, fish lay their eggs in the current and then on that turnaround and start heading back you get the return sardine."
