Full list of nominees for Public Protector post
Thuli Madonsela has formally received a nomination to serve another term as the country's Public Protector, and so has her deputy Kevin Malunga.
The list of 73 names put forward for the Public Protector position has been made public by Parliament's Ad Hoc Committee.
Also on the list are Durban-born human rights activist Pregs Govender, KZN's Director of Public Prosecutions Moipone Noko, Advocate Dali Mpofu, who is also EFF national chairperson.
Professor Shadrack Gutto of the Institute of African Renaissance Studies at Unisa says the fact that Madonsela's name is there is a vote of confidence in her.
"We have to wait because the process is now on. We have the nominations and of course, you have to agree to be nominated. I doubt very much if she will try that because then she will damage the reputation that she has brought to that office and her integrity as a professional of excelence," he said.
Some have however declined their nominations. They include former Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene, former first lady Graca Machel, former NPA boss Vusi Pikoli and State prosecutor Gerrie Nel.
Madonsela's seven-year term as Public Protector ends in October. Although she's been nominated, the Constitution states that she can only serve one term.
The Parliamentary Committee will start interviewing nominees after the local government elections.
