In KZN on Thursday, five people were killed and three wounded in separate drive-by shootings in Tongaat.

Police say one of the targets appears to have been a taxi owner.

In the first incident a vehicle came under fire on the R102.

A driver and a passenger died.

Police say a few minutes later, the same car with the gunmen was seen at the second incident at the Fairbreeze intersection, where three security guards were shot dead.

A taxi boss, who was being escorted in a separate vehicle, was unharmed.

Former Constitutional Court judge Johann Kriegler, who's with Freedom Under Law, says these types of killings pose a threat to constitutional democracy.

"Murder is being used as a tool to undermine the rule of law, which means that it is endangering the public. A constitutional system depends on the law being maintained in an orderly fashion."

Police are also working to solve the suspected assassination of well-known liquidator Cloete Murray and his son, who were ambushed by gunmen on the N1 in Midrand on Saturday.
