Free State crash: Death toll climbs to 13, driver arrested

A truck driver has been arrested by Free State police following a fatal accident which claimed the lives of 13 people in the early hours of Monday morning.

The 47-year-old survived the accident unharmed.
He's facing charges of culpable homicide.

Three other children were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
According to police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng the suspect is said to have lost control of his vehicle and swerved in front of the oncoming minibus taxi on the N1 some 22km from Verkeerdevlei towards Winburg.
Thirteen people, including the taxi driver, three children and a baby, died on the scene.
