Fraud biggest contributor to number of arrests in Q4 - Hawks
Updated | By Lauren Hendricks
Fraud contributed to the highest number of arrests during the fourth quarter of 2023 and into 2024.
This is according to Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya, who says over 220 individuals were arrested over this period.
He says there have also been convictions.
"A total number of 180, including seven juristic, were secured with 84 convictions emanating from serious organised crimes, 61 emanate from serious commercial crime, whereas 37 emanate from serious corruption investigations. Of these convictions, 120 are South Africans, while 55, which represent 30%, are foreign nationals."
Lebeya has been outlining the work of the directorate during the last quarter of last year.
One case involved a KZN police officer who was investigating a fraud case.

Lebeya says the officer accepted a bribe of R5,000 to destroy evidence against the accused.
The officer has been sentenced.
Lebeya adds several tax fraud cases involving millions of rands are still in court in KZN.
