Police in Estcourt have shot and killed four
gunmen suspected of carrying out cash-in-transit crimes.
"Two AK-47 assault rifles, an R5, a pellet gun and undisclosed amount of money were found in possesion of the suspects," said KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda.
The gang was found travelling in three vehicles in the afternoon.
Netshiunda said they held up security guards forcing them to surrender their firearms and the cash they were transporting in their armoured van.
"The suspects were then engaged in a shootout with Road Traffic Inspectorate officers, a shootout which saw two officers sustaining injuries.
"The Estcourt Highway Patrol officers then responded and were also involved in a shootout with the suspects."
