The waste management giant operates the Shongweni Landfill site, west of Durban.

Residents from the Upper Highway area, including Shongweni, Hillcrest and Assagay, blame EnviroServ for a strong chemical smell they claim poses a health risk to them and their families.

The National Prosecuting Authority's Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says EnviroServ CEO Dean Thompson, Esme Gombault, Clive Kidd and Johan Schoonraad now face charges along with the company.

"This matter, the State versus EnviroServ did appear in the Durban Regional Court today. Four more accused were added to the charge sheet. The matter was postponed to the 17th of November. The accused in this matter are charged with contraventions of the National Environmental Waste Act, as well as the National Environmental Management Air Quality Act," she said.

EnviroServ confirmed to Newswatch that it has received an amended charge sheet from the NPA, saying its legal team is studying the document and will respond in due course.
