Four jailed for stealing copper cables in Newcastle

Four people have been convicted and jailed
for stealing copper cables in Newcastle.

The group was arrested last year during a stop and search in Blood River.
The Hawks say 120 kilograms of copper, estimated to be worth nearly R130 000, was found in the car they were travelling in.
It was later discovered the cables were stolen from Transnet railway lines at Hlobane.

The Hawks' KZN spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo says the four learned their fate in the regional court on Thursday.
"The case docket was allocated to the Hawks. As a result the accused was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, two of them. The other one was sentenced to 8 years.
"And the older one, the 67-year-old, was sentenced just to 5 years imprisonment."
