Former ward councillor, Brandon Pillay takes his place in parliament
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Chatsworth resident Brandon Pillay has promised to serve the country with diligence and keep the spirit of Ubuntu alive.

Pillay stepped into his new role in Parliament this week.
He was sworn in as an ANC MP replacing Advocate Loyiso Mpumlwana.
He says he'll be guided by his years of experience as a community leader.
"I started my activism at the age of 17 and I went to serve the regional executive committee in the eThekwini region I also was a ward councillor where I have been serving at the helm of community issues. I've been a civic leader for almost all my life."

Pillay's paid tribute to those who have mentored him along the way, "I owe a lot to the late Professor Fatima Meer. She helped groom me from a young age. Then I had the likes of Professor Ashwin Desai who mentored me. The thing that stands out for me is the spirit of Ubuntu."
"The communities like Chatsworth have common issues, and even in their poverty, they are able to still be united and help each other," he says.
