Former president Zuma back home in Nkandla

Former president Jacob Zuma celebrated his 80th birthday at his homestead in Nkandla -  a day after failing to show up for his corruption trial at the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

Jacob Zuma Foundation spokesperson Mzwanele Manyi says the former statesman spent the day with his family and close friends after being released by doctors.

“I can confirm that President Zuma is at home with his family after doctors gave him a reprieve, I don’t know how long that will last and whether he will wake up tomorrow and go back to the hospital I do not know and I think what matters is that he is at home.

“The doctors made the call that he can be at home and the doctors made the call that he could not be in court, as to why is there a difference I think that is what the doctors can answer.”

Zuma and co-accused, French arms dealer Thales, are facing charges of fraud and corruption related to government’s multi-billion-rand arms deal of the late 1990s.

Zuma missed the resumption - and subsequent postponement-  of his trial for alleged corruption the day before on the grounds of ill health.
