The accused appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The four suspects were escorted into the dock under heavy police guard.

They have all hired private counsel.

In an interesting revelation, former NPA boss Mxolisi Nxasana is representing two of the accused.

The court heard that all four men would not be applying for bail just yet, as their lawyers have not seen the docket.

The court heard that two of the suspects are Mozambican nationals.

Nxasana's two clients claim to be South African, but the State says their nationality has not yet been verified as they are yet to receive proof of citizenship from them.

Nxasana told the court his clients claim they handed over their smart IDs and passports to one of the investigating officers, but the State disputed this.

The matter has been postponed to January for further investigation.
