Former National Assembly Speaker Frene Ginwala dies

The founding speaker of South Africa’s
democratic Parliament Frene Ginwala has died.
She was 90-years-old.
Ginwala passed away at her home in Cape Town on Thursday evening after suffering a stroke two weeks ago.

The anti-apartheid struggle icon served in several roles as a lawyer, academic, political leader, activist and journalist.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has since conveyed his condolences to her family.
"Doctor Ginwala was influential and instrumental in shaping the advancement of democracy and the entrenchment of democratic political processes and fundamental socio-economic rights in the southern African development community and the continent at large,” said Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya.
