A former northern KwaZulu-Natal station commander who was due to plead guilty to theft in court on Friday has died.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) says the woman took her own life.
The police watchdog says the ex-colonel was accused of stealing over R100 000 in exhibit money from a station in Mandeni.
She was also charged with non-compliance with the Ipid Act.

Spokesperson Grace Langa says the woman had been expected to appear in the Richards Bay Commercial Crime Court.
"She was expected to perhaps plead guilty this morning. Unfortunately, we were informed this morning that the former station commander consumed poison this morning when she was supposed to come to court.
"The case has been postponed to the 4th of March for her lawyers to bring death certificate as a confirmation, meaning the case will be closed."
