Former Durban headmaster in court for allegedly stealing millions from school coffers
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
A retired headmaster of a prestigious Durban boys school accused of stealing over R5 million from the school's funds has made his first appearance in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court.
The former Glenwood High School principal is said to have embezzled the funds over a five-year period.
He was arrested earlier today and advised on charges against him.
State prosecutor, Wendy O'Brien, says this is because he is considered a flight risk, especially because he holds dual South African and British citizenship.
The state asked the court for bail to be set at R100 000 which was granted.
The conditions of his bail include handing over his passports and reporting to the Westville Police Station twice a week.
Lawyer for the accused, Carl van der Merwe, told the court he felt the bail amount is reasonable and that his client would be able to abide by the set conditions.
The accused was asked if he understood the charges against him to which said 'I do'.
The case has been postponed to 21 June to allow for investigations.
