Forensic expert grilled in Senzo Meyiwa murder trial

It was a tough day on the witness stand for the forensic investigator in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial.

The defence spent most of Tuesday attempting to poke holes in Sergeant Thabo Mosia’s testimony.

Mosia, who was the first forensic expert to arrive at the crime scene on the night of Meyiwa’s murder, told the High Court in Pretoria the soccer star had been taken to hospital in a private car before his arrival.

Advocate Malesela Teffo, for the defence, then asked Mosia why he did not collect a crutch which was apparently used to assault one of the suspects during a scuffle.

“The evidence collected here is a bullet jacket and a hat,” said Mosia.

“I saw no reason to investigate the crutch because the witnesses in the house confirmed that it belonged to one of them.”

Teffo also challenged Mosia’s testimony on the time he arrived at the crime scene.

Mosia says it took him 35 minutes from his home in Katlehong to Vosloorus after he received the call informing him of the shooting.

“I had to drive past the local police station to get the correct address of the crime scene and I think I made a typing error in the crime report instead of writing 23:45 I wrote 23:55.”

Mosia conceded that a revolver pistol may have been used to kill Meyiwa instead of a 9mm parabellum pistol.

“I guess for that reason the firearm that was used might be a revolver due to the reason that there was no cartridge case found at the crime scene.”

The trial will continue on Thursday with Mosia still on the witness stand.
