Forced marriage suspects in court

Three men have appeared in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court in the Eastern Cape - for allegedly forcing a 15-year-old girl into marrying a 26-year-old man.
The three were arrested by the Hawks on Saturday.

Spokesperson Anelisa Feni says two of the suspects - who are the girl's grandfathers - allegedly negotiated and deceived her into undergoing the traditions of ukuthwala with the 26-year-old man.
He's facing charges of abduction and attempted rape.

All three suspects were granted R500 bail, and are due back in court in March.
"These three arrests should serve as a warning to anyone who is practicing ukuthwala, as it is considered a forced marriage. It is actually co-operated into the Trafficking in Persons Act," she said.
