Food inflation forcing many household ‘to eat less’
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
A local group monitoring food security says soaring prices have forced many lower-income households in KZN into survival mode.
The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group has been commenting on consumer inflation's marginal decline to 5.3% in March.
Programme Coordinator Mervyn Abrahams says the average cost of the household food basket is around R5 200.
"Today, it is R311 more expensive than it was a year ago."
He says many households are struggling, adding that those who earn less than R5 000 won't feel immediate relief as inflation slows.

"The only survival strategy for lower-income households is either to eat fewer meals a day, and we see that happen all around South Africa, or they buy less notorious food, cheap food, in order to gain more calories for their body to basically starve or they go deeper into debt."
