Flood victims still living in halls one month on
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
More than a month since the KZN floods claimed over 400 lives and destroyed dozens of homes, community halls are still sheltering hundreds of residents who lost their homes and belongings.
Newswatch visited one of the halls in Durban on Thursday to see how its occupants were holding up since the disaster turned their lives upside down.
Young mother, Lungile Msondo is being housed at a community hall in Umlazi.
She's described the day she watched her home get swallowed up by the river.
"I came out of the house and I told the kids that they must come out because the roof was falling on top of us, then they came out. I saw the house falling down in pieces. The beds and wardrobes fell into the river."
Nomthandazo Ngcobo from the area's K Section has taken refuge at the hall.
She says it's not easy.
"Some of the rooms collapsed because of the floods, so at the moment, I am living at the K hall. The councillor said I should come and live here so that I can get some help from anyone who comes to the hall and helps us. But for now, we are still waiting for the material to rebuild our houses, but I am not sure if it's going to be enough, but we are hoping for the best."
Deputy Minister of Social Development Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, along with the National Lotteries Commission, distributed food and other items at three Umlazi community halls on Thursday.
