Fivefold increase in taxi-related killings in Ugu, Harry Gwala districts

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says taxi-related killings in the first half of this year in the Ugu and Harry Gwala districts increased almost fivefold compared to the same period last year.

Mkhwanazi and Police Minister Bheki Cele were in Gamalakhe on Thursday to discuss safety concerns in the industry.
Mkhwanazi addressed taxi operators and role players at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.

"We have seen quite a number of incidents of murders. Five people were killed between January and July [last year] and this time, around 24 people have been killed in the same period.
"That's the reason why we are here today."
