Five hospitalised after car plunges into river in Tongaat
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Five people have been rushed to hospital after a car went over a bridge in Tongaat, north of KwaZulu-Natal and plunged 30 metres into a river.
IPSS Medical Rescue says four people were in the vehicle when the driver lost control and crashed through the Maidstone Bridge on the R102.
A pedestrian who was on the bridge was knocked off it by the car - and fell into the water.
IPSS spokesperson, Paul Herbst says several rescue teams helped to get the injured out and treat to them.
"On arrival, the occupants were trapped in the vehicle in the water. Rescuers abseiled - using a high-angled technical system - down to extricate the patients from the vehicle.
"A pedestrian that was also involved in the collision sustained critical injuries. All the patients were treated on scene and transported by IPSS Medical Rescue to various hospitals for further care," Herbst said.
