40-year-old Goodwin was accidentally shot in the chest by a colleague at a shooting range in Pietermaritzburg last week during training.

He was a member of the Durban Flying Squad.

Family and friends bid Goodwin a final farewell at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Musgrave this afternoon.

They say the police force has lost a diligent member and a great human being.

Officer Suman Singh who worked closely with him says he was loved dearly.

"He had a heart of gold, smiling all the time and just willing to help each and every person," Singh said.

Another close colleague, Officer Shanice Solomons say Goodwin was fondly known as 'Macs'.

"He made an impact on everybody's life. It didn't matter to him who you are, he had respect for everybody. Our wish is for him to know we loved him and we miss him very much," Solomons said.
