Fitness industry calls for reopening of gyms in virtual protest
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The COVID-19 global crisis has dealt a shattering blow to South Africa's health and fitness industry.
Members who took part in nationwide protests say the closure of gyms, more than five months ago, has led to 75% salary cuts for many of them, including Virgin Active staff, and temporary layoffs.
Gyms are believed to be among the last facilities to reopen when the lockdown eases.
Staff, trainers and other stakeholders held a virtual demonstration on Wednesday calling for the early reopening of gyms.

FitSA's Grant Austin says they understand that exercise sessions will need to change, adding they are ready to adapt to the new COVID-19 guidelines.
"In terms of the kind of revenues generated R800 million to R1 billion per month in gym fees.
"There's the pay-as-you-earn, there's the company tax, so the health and fitness industry is a huge contributor to our economy.
"The closure of the industry would result in probably R250 million to R300 million a month on the loss of income for people. So it is very significant," says Austin.
