First healthcare worker to receive jab hopes the 'end is near' for COVID-19
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The first healthcare worker to receive the COVID-19 jab in KZN says she couldn’t get a wink of sleep last night.
Specialist physician, Dr Nerika Maharaj is one of the frontliners in the fight against the coronavirus.
The specialist physician received her jab at Prince Mshiyeni Hospital in Umlazi this morning.
She says it was a fairly quick and easy process, " It was a small needle. I felt nothing so I am going to see how I feel in the next couple of hours but I am assuming, I am going to be fine."
Maharaj said she’s feeling hopeful after seeing so much heartbreak in the hospital over the past year, "Patients have been really sick and it's been tough here at internal medicine at Prince Mshiyeni Hospital, trying to monitor and cover the COVID ward and the infections. It's been really heartbreaking and I am waiting for the heartbreak to end."

"I want it to end, we all want it to end. We have done ward rounds with tears in our eyes and with no hope at some stages and I think as a country we have rallied together and we have worked hard.
Maharaj says they have tried to do the best that they can, "We have saved a lot of lives even though it's been quite tragic for most people. I am just relieved and I am hoping that the end is near."
