Firefighters extinguish Red Hill informal settlement fire
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
The blaze that ripped through an informal settlement in Durban North, has been extinguished.
More than 20 informal dwellings on Malacca Road in Red Hill have been gutted. It's thought the fire may have been sparked by an illegal electricity connection.
Authorities are still on scene assessing the extent of the damage.
eThekwini Fire's Jesse Yasudas says there's relief after the inferno was stopped from engulfing more structures.
"In the middle of the settlement, there is an electricity supply [chord] and there are lots of connections in that settlement. There is a lot of dampening down to be done, overturning of the burnt rubble and extinguishing the hot spots to make sure that there's no further spread," Yasudas said.
