Fire fighters are now dampening down hotspots at the multi-storey building at the corner of Gillespie Street and Dr Pixley KaSeme Street, that is the old West Street.

Metro police spokesperson, Parboo Sewpersad says traffic is still being redirected.

"The firefighters are busy working on the scene, the building has been evacuated. There is no congestion, the road is closed on Dr. Pixley ka Seme, that's West Street, between OR Tambo and Mahatma Ghandi," he said.

Rescue Care's Garrith Jamieson says people from inside the building were evacuated earlier and no injuries have been reported.
