Fire ravaged parliamentary buildings 'not insured'
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
A massive fire destroyed the National Assembly and offices at the parliamentary precinct at the start of the year.
The National Freedom Party says the Department of Public Works has revealed the gutted buildings in the parliamentary precinct were not insured.
The issue of insurance was revealed by the acting director-general of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure Development Imtiaz Fazel.
He admitted that the buildings were not insured while answering questions from MPs last week.
National Freedom Party MP Ahmed Munzoor Shaik Emam said this means the taxpayer will have to pay for any repairs.
"We established that none of the state properties are insured in the whole country, added to the damaged at parliament remember our offices have been gutted as well, this means computers, desk, printers and everything have been totally destroyed."
On Friday, the Cape Town fire department released an assessment report that indicates that sprinklers within parliament were last serviced in 2017.
