Gino Leopardi says he was at home when he got a call about the blaze.

"When I got there with my brother, we ran around like crazy all over. We ran to the kitchen, the 31st floor,. We took the lift and jumped off the 30th floor. We walked through the fire escape, and I said, 'Where is the fire?' Then, suddenly, we got to the roof, and the fire brigade was there. It was a small fire, and thank God we got there on time."

eThekwini firefighters say it was a small fire, and they managed to contain it quickly.

They suspect a cigarette left on the couch on the balcony is what started the flame.

Leopardi says they will be tightening the rules around smoking.

"Roma is very safe, there is no question about it, but I am sorry to hear this news and to make people now a little concerned about Roma. They have nothing to worry about and nothing to be concerned about safety."
