Gordhan and officials from Eskom are currently addressing the media in Johannesburg.

He says he can't at this stage say how long the loadshedding will last as they are still getting a better grasp of the problems they are facing.

Eskom Board Chairperson, Jabu Mabuza says Eskom is facing structural, financial and operational problems due to malfeasance.

Mabuza says Eskom's new plants are tripping due to various problems.

"There's a gap between the installed base and what is available - the 48 000 and 28 000 - and the demand. If the demand is met then there is no need to load shed. If there is more demand than supply, you need to find another way of dealing with this. The new plants are not producing the required capacity. The old ones are too old - we are now pushing them. There is just so much that they can do."
