Financial gain inspiring corruption: Education Department
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Department of Basic Education feels the main reason behind corruption within its ranks is for personal financial gain.
Spokesperson, Elijah Mahlangu, says the department plans to alleviate the problem. He has been speaking after a preliminary report into a jobs-for-cash scandal was released earlier this week.
KZN was fingered as one of the provinces where incidents allegedly occurred. The department admitted it had failed to maintain control of the hiring process.
Mahlangu says the stakes were high because senior principal and teacher posts come a certain degree of power and prestige.
"So what we will do now is to restructure the appointment system in order to tighten and make sure that those who used to abuse or cheat the system are no longer able to do so. For now though we will wait for the task team to complete its report", he said.
