Budget constraints limit scholar transport service: KZN Education
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The KZN Education Department says financial constraints mean it has only been able to provide transport to just over half of the pupils in KZN who walk long distances to school.
The department reached agreement with community organisation, Equal Education, which took up the matter of school transport on behalf of learners, at the Pietermaritzburg High Court yesterday.
The department will provide transport to pupils from 12 schools in Nquthu in northern KZN by April.

MEC Mthandeni Dlungwana says they have received applications for government-assisted transport for at least 90,000 children across the province.
"Because of the the financial constraints, we are unable to transport the entire 90,000 learners who qualify. Currently we are transporting 47,000 learners. We know that the the need for learner transport is great because of the delay in our province and because of the distances that are being travelled by our learners," he says.
