According to the South African Revenue Service, the owner first brought the car into the country in 2014.

The owner however could not cough up the money required for customs duty and VAT on the Ferrari F1.

The car has been kept in a bonded warehouse for the past three years, ready to be claimed by its owner once the necessary tax has been paid.

SARS says in February this year, the owner made a declaration that the car would now be exported to the DRC, and was allowed to exit through the Beitbridge border post.

But in a sneaky move, there was an attempt to smuggle the Ferrari back into South Africa a day later, through the same border post.

The revenue service says the Ferrari was intercepted at the border and has now been seized by officials.

According to officials at SARS, the owner  has been issued with a letter of intent as part of the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act No 3 of 2000 to enable them to make representation to SARS.
