LISTEN: Fee increments must not exceed 8%: Minister Blade Nzimande
Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande says individual universities should be allowed to determine the increase that their institutions will require to ensure that they continue to operate effectively.
Nzimande has been briefing the media in Pretoria on his recommendations on the 2017 fees adjustments for universities and TVET colleges.
The announcement comes a week after the ANCYL sent an open letter to the minister, calling on him to implement a 0 percent fee increase for all higher education institutions.
However, following this morning's briefing, Nzimande suggested that with the current rise in inflation, it's up to every university to decide on their increments.
He says the process needs to be transparent, reasonable and related to inflation-linked adjustments - taking into account the affordability to students.
